What Your Teeth Say About Your Health

Your dental health is only one small part of your overall health; however, the mouth can oftentimes be the first place to show signs of health issues in the body. Below are some warning signs to look for in order to be better aware of your general health.

  • Flat, worn teeth plus headache – This can indicate great stress that is causing teeth grinding at night.
  • Cracking, crumbling teeth – Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux; acid breaks down enamel on the teeth.
  • Sores that won’t go away – This may be the beginning stages of oral cancer; smokers are at a higher risk.
  • Gums growing over teeth – Certain medications may cause the gums to overgrow; these will need to be adjusted.
  • Dry mouth – This could be a sign of Sjogren’s syndrome and/or diabetes; look for other signs to rule out.
  • White webbing inside cheeks – Lichen planus; can start in the mouth, then migrate to other areas.
  • Crusting dentures – This can lead to aspiration pneumonia; be sure to remove and wash dentures regularly.
