Invisalign®: The Clear Choice

Posted in Invisalign®

5 minute read

One of the first features people notice is a person’s smile, so many patients seek cosmetic dental treatments that can give them a personable and attractive facial aesthetic. Rather than getting traditional metal braces, many patients are opting for inconspicuous and comfortable smile correction with Invisalign®. This nearly imperceivable approach is the clear choice for correcting crooked or crowded teeth and helping patients achieve the smile they desire. Invisalign® patients can speak, smile, and laugh without anyone noticing they are straightening their teeth at the same time.

How does Invisalign® work?

Gradually, over several months, a series of clear, BPA-free, thermoplastic trays customized to fit your teeth will gently shift them into the proper alignment. Throughout the process, patients will not have to deal with the extra maintenance, diet restrictions, or uncomfortable mouthful of metal associated with braces. Invisalign® can:

  • Straighten crooked teeth
  • Address overcrowding
  • Close gaps between the teeth
  • Correct bite abnormalities
  • Create a straighter, more attractive smile

Is Invisalign® good for your teeth?

Invisalign® allows you to achieve straighter teeth, which can help promote better dental hygiene, help prevent tooth decay and plaque buildup, and improve speech and eating function. By straightening the teeth, Invisalign® promotes better dental health because straight teeth are easier to clean and guard against bacterial buildup as well as abnormal wear on tooth enamel.

How is Invisalign® better than metal braces?

Invisalign® trays are more aesthetically appealing than braces because they are virtually invisible. They are also removable, which makes eating and dental hygiene much more effective and less restricting compared to braces. The trays are comfortable and smooth, unlike braces that have metal wires and brackets that can irritate your mouth and create painful sores. Invisalign® causes only minor discomfort that is to be expected with moving teeth. This discomfort is more of a feeling of pressure than pain and can typically be felt during the first few days of each new set. Invisalign® also requires less time in the dentist’s chair for adjustments and fewer office visits than braces.

What is Invisalign® treatment like?

Each tray is worn for approximately two weeks and then exchanged for the next set to slowly move the teeth by applying controlled force. You must wear them 22 hours per day, removing them only to clean them or to eat. The length of treatment varies among patients, but most adults will see final results after one year, and teenagers see results within one to two years. This timeframe can vary more significantly for teens.

How do I take care of my Invisalign® trays?

A special Invisalign® cleaning system can be used to clean the trays. Brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water can also suffice. Brush your teeth after every meal to prevent food residue from staining your trays. Avoid putting them in hot water because it can warp the plastic. If they begin to warp or crack, contact your dental practitioner right away to get a new set.

What can I eat and drink during my Invisalign® treatment?

With metal braces, patients must avoid eating popcorn, chips, apples, corn on the cob, chewy candy, and many other favorite foods. However, Invisalign® comes with no dietary restrictions. Since you must always remove the trays for eating, you can eat anything. You can also drink anything you like with Invisalign®, but be sure to clean your teeth and aligners soon after consuming sugary beverages so as not to trap sugar between them and damage your teeth.

What results can I expect after Invisalign® treatment?

One of the main benefits of Invisalign® is that you will see results throughout the treatment process. You may even see initial improvement by the time you switch to your second set of alignment trays. After Invisalign® treatment, you may need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position. The results of Invisalign® can last indefinitely. With proper use of a retainer, daily oral hygiene, and regular dental visits, you can maintain a straight, beautiful, and healthy smile long-term.

Am I a candidate for Invisalign®?

Patients who have lost all of their baby teeth may be candidates for Invisalign®. Depending on physical and emotional maturity, candidates could be as young as 12 or 13. If you had braces in the past, but your teeth have since shifted, you may also benefit from Invisalign®. If you suffer from severe issues such as a large overbite, you may need a more advanced orthodontic procedure.

How much does Invisalign® cost?

The cost of Invisalign® is usually comparable to the cost of metal braces unless extensive correction is needed, including improving a severe overbite, rotating a tooth, or moving the teeth vertically. In some cases, metal braces are a better option. After assessing your teeth, your dentist will determine the treatment that will best meet your needs and inform you of the estimated cost.
