Do you wake up with a headache or jaw pain? Are you usually tired throughout the day despite getting plenty of sleep? Chances are that you may be suffering from “bruxism” (teeth grinding). According to an article on CNN’s website, “It occurs in approximately 14% to 17% of children, although these rates decrease with age.” There is no identifying gene for this occurrence; however, there is evidence that it can run in the family – affecting both males and females.

During an oral exam, I can help determine if there is any damage being done to the teeth as a results of excess grinding, usually a characteristic of worn down teeth. In extreme cases, the enamel can be cracked. It is important to find out what is causing the patient to grind his/her teeth in order to treat it accordingly. Some of the common factors leading to bruxism include high levels of stress, crooked teeth, use of drugs and/or other medications, or complications of another disease. In many cases, a mouth piece can be used at night in order to protect the teeth from grinding while other issues are treated. Stress, aggression, or other causes of bruxism must be addressed in order to reduce and eventually eliminate grinding at night.
