Five Things Your Dentist Really Wants You to Know About Your Mouth

There are many things that the dentist tells you to do to maintain healthy gums and teeth, which is typically discussed during the routine dental check-up. The following five items are some of the most important things to take into consideration.

  • You May Not be Brushing Long Enough – It is important to brush the teeth for at least two minutes, spending 30 seconds on each section of the teeth (upper right, upper left, lower right, and lower left). Be sure to brush the tongue in order to remove odor-causing bacteria.
  • Protect Your Enamel – Eating and drinking acidic foods/beverages can gradually break down the enamel, which is why it is so important to brush and rinse with enamel-strengthening ingredients like fluoride.
  • Keep Cavities at Bay by Using a Full Oral Care Regimen – Simply remembering to brush and floss the teeth two times a day can help stave off cavities and infections. Furthermore, mouthwash can be a great addition to your routine for hard-to-reach places.
  • Bad Breath May Mean Poor Oral Hygiene – Bacteria that has not been removed from the tongue and/or teeth can cause chronic bad breath. Chewing sugarfree gum increases saliva flow and may help wash away bacteria.
  • Change Your Toothbrush – Frayed brush bristles are not as effective in removing plaque, which is why it is strongly urged for you to replace your toothbrush every three months.

By closely following these tips, you may decrease your chances of disease – both oral and overall body health. Please feel free to contact my practice for additional information.
