Chewing Tobacco and Snus Effects on Oral and Dental Health

Recently, the emergence of a smokeless tobacco product called “Swedish Snus” has gained popularity with many smokers. This product can be used in locations where smoking is prohibited so that individuals can get their nicotine dose. However, the use of this and other smokeless items, chewing tobacco included, can cause undesirable effects to the teeth and oral health.

One of the most prominent side effects of using Snus or chewing tobacco is staining of the teeth surrounding the area where the tobacco is located. Overtime, the teeth begin to dull and yellow or brown stains may appear. Those who visit my Beverly Hills Cosmetic Dentist practice often ask of ways to remove these discolorations and how they may be prevented. To be honest, the only way to prevent staining is to refrain from using chewing tobacco and/or Snus. However, those who are in need of assistance for existing stains, I offer teeth whitening, composite fillings, and porcelain veneers.

The most permanent solution to these problems is receiving porcelain veneers. Porcelain is non-porous and will not absorb stain like enamel or resin restorations do, which can provide a whiter, brighter smile for patients. Teeth whitening is a temporary solution, as are composite fillings because they can become stained over time.
