Patients who receive dental implants – titanium rods that replace the natural tooth root – must be sure to follow their dental provider’s instructions in order to ensure proper healing. An educated and well-informed patient may achieve optimal results when doing so.
Some tips to follow during the recovery period include:
- Biting down on gauze pads for approximately one hour at a time within the first 12 to 24 hours of your procedure
- To help control bleeding, place a moistened black tea bag on the treated area and bite down
- Place an ice pack on the outside of the cheek on the side of the dental implants to help pain and swelling
- Smoking should be ceased for at least five days in order to prevent complications during the healing process
- Keep clear of hot foods and liquids during the first week after the treatment; the warm can cause the blood clots to dissolve and may cause infections
- Straws should not be used when drinking beverages, the pressure may cause blood clots to dislodge from the treated area

Men and women who visit my Beverly Hills practice in order to restore missing teeth with dental implants must be aware of proper care post-treatment. Because the natural tooth root has been replaced, it is important to follow instructions in order to prevent infections or complications from occurring. This can also help ensure that the surrounding teeth remain in good condition.
Just as you would brush and floss your teeth normally, it is of great importance to remember to do so at least twice a day when dental implants are in place. Special floss may be useful when caring for your implants and abutments. A soft bristle tooth brush with a bent handle can allow you to better move and clean the teeth and implants. In addition, the use of an oral irrigation device can be beneficial for deeper cleaning.
Along with daily care, it is imperative to maintain regular dental visits twice a year to undergo professional cleanings. Most patients may need a special mouthwash that is intended to reduce bacteria in the mouth in order to prevent infections. One of the most important things to remember is to refrain from smoking and eating or drinking anything that could stain the teeth as these can also stain your new implants.

If you currently wear removable dentures and are looking for an alternative, then you may be an ideal candidate for dental implants. Many of my patients at my Beverly Hills practice who wish to be free of the hassle and worry of dentures are interested in learning more about their options.
Although removal dentures have been an easy method to replace missing teeth, they often cause gum problems and insecurity when worn. Slipping and/or completely falling out of the mouth can be embarrassing, which prevents many individuals from participating in social events or even everyday small talk with others. Dental implants can replace temporary dentures with a permanent tooth restoration for one or more teeth. Because the tooth’s root is replaced with a titanium rod and becomes a part of the jawbone, the new tooth will stay in place and provide patients with a natural-looking smile. In addition, the use of dental implants and caps can prevent further damage to the surrounding teeth. Those who have full dentures may also be eligible for dental implants; by placing multiple implants in the jawbone, a full, permanent denture may be placed in the mouth.
As each patient has a unique dental structure and needs, it is important to visit a qualified dentist who can help you reach your goals. To learn more regarding dental implants and how they may be of benefit to you, please schedule an appointment at my Beverly Hills his office.
